Bat Language

Paintings from the Middle Ages often depict exorcisms in which a devil with bat-like wings is driven out of a human body. Historical records also describe how those possessed spoke with altered voices or in incomprehensible languages. The return of the original voice was a sign that the “dissonance between voice and body” had been resolved.

중세 시대의 퇴마 의식을 다룬 그림들은 종종 박쥐 날개를 지닌 악마가 인간의 몸 밖으로 쫓겨나는 장면을 묘사한다. 악령에 사로잡힌 이들은 목소리가 변하거나 알아들을 수 없는 언어를 구사했다는 기록도 전해진다. 이때 본래의 목소리가 회복되는 것은 ‘목소리와 신체의 불일치’가 치유되었음을 의미했다.
